Plane Pilates

Welcome to Plane Pilates, a resource born out of both personal experience and a desire to help others travel more comfortably and healthfully. In 2019, I took a trip to Australia, an unforgettable adventure that began with a 16-hour flight from San Diego. Like many long-haul travelers, I found myself pacing the aisles, stretching, and even sneaking in a few Pilates-inspired exercises to combat the stiffness and fatigue that inevitably set in. Fast forward to a recent conversation with one of my clients, who shared how much she appreciated doing Pilates before her 6 ½-hour flight to the Dominican Republic. Her story, combined with my own experiences, sparked the idea for Plane Pilates.

Long flights can take a toll on our bodies, often leaving us feeling cramped, sluggish, and even at risk for health issues such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). According to Dr. John A. Heit, a hematologist at the Mayo Clinic, “travelers who take long flights—more than four hours in length—face a two- to three-fold increase in the risk of developing a blood clot.” These clots, known as DVTs, form deep inside the legs and can become serious if they travel to the lungs. The key to mitigating these risks, as highlighted by experts, is movement.

That’s where Plane Pilates comes in. This program is designed to offer simple, effective exercises you can do before, during, and after your flight to improve circulation, ease muscle tension, and keep your energy levels up. Whether you’re embarking on a long-haul journey or a shorter flight, these movements can help you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.

Let’s redefine how we travel—with movement, mindfulness, and a touch of Pilates to keep us grounded, even at 35,000 feet.
